Are Miracles Possible

Why Believe in Miracles? short answer

By definition a miracle is an event that occurs that supersedes natural laws. Therefore science will never be able to measure a miracle because its tools for measurement are all based on the natural and physical world. And since miracles are supernatural they cannot be accurately measured by science.

In addition, miracles are historical events observed by eyewitnesses. Therefore, generally speaking, they cannot be proven scientifically because science demands that measurements be taken and that those measurements be repeatedly taken by multiple observers. In fact, history itself cannot be proven scientifically because we have no way of repeating those events and measuring them. A video can be falsified and physical evidence must be placed at the scene by eyewitnesses. Therefore we must rely on other methods of validating truth and identifying reality.

A very common method that all societies have used to determine whether something is true and real is called the “Legal-Historical” method.

We use this in our courts of law and conclude “beyond a reasonable doubt” that something is true. We say that the court proved that so and so was guilty of murder. Was it proved scientifically? No, but we still hold it to be PROVEN true.

The scientific method will probably never be used to settle the question of whether a God exists and whether that God has acted miraculously in the affairs of mankind. To find that answer we are forced to use the data that comes through the legal and historical methods and eyewitness accounts.

Most reasonable people would admit that if an all powerful God really does exist, then miracles are easy. So the real question to consider when trying to determine whether miracles are possible is the question of the existence of God.

The Bible teaches that an all-powerful God does exist. And that any time He desires He can perform.

He can change the laws of nature or He can override the laws of nature. He can choose to create things out of nothing (feeding the five thousand), or heal a fatal disease, or resurrect one from the dead (i.e. – a man named Lazereth). From God's perspective physical miracles are of little importance compared to the true miracle of what He did in providing salvation through His Son's death on the cross. So according to the Bible miracles are easy. The real question is does an all powerful God really exist. That is the real question…
